The Spanish Cobras originated in the Humboldt Park community on Chicago's Northwest side in the early 1950's. The Spanish Cobras were formed due to a significant wave of Puerto Rican migration on the Northside of Chicago that began in the late 1940's. In the mid 1940's, Chicago based employment agencies began to recruit Puerto Rican men to work as unskilled foundry laborers and Puerto Rican women as domestic workers. Over the years, a large Puerto Rican population was developed on the Near North and West side as men and women would send for family members once they established stable jobs and residences. By the early 1960's, a solid portion of the Puerto Rican community were concentrated throughout the Humboldt Park, Lincoln Park, and West Town neighborhoods, in which also held a moderate presence of Polish and Mexican immigrants as well as African Americans. In the mid 1960's, a prominent ammount of Puerto Rican residents were displaced in the Lincoln Park community by urban renewal programs and the redevelopment of Lincoln Park. This lead many Puerto Rican residents to relocate to the Humboldt Park and West Town neighborhoods where their concentration facilitated the creation of Chicago first Puerto Rican neighborhood along the Division street corridor, which residents formerly commonly referred to as La Division. During these events, clique orientated clubs and street gangs began to solidify their presence throughout these neighborhoods. Soon after, the Spanish Cobras and Latin Kings street gang began to feud in the Humboldt Park community. In the late 1960's-to-early 70's, the Spanish Cobras united with Latin Disciples, Imperial Gangsters, and Latin Eagles to form the United Latino Organization (ULO), which acted as an alliance among Latino street gangs before the Folks & People alliances were originated in the late 1970's.
Throughout the late 1960's and early 1970's, the Spanish Cobras feuded with various White and Puerto Rican street gangs, including the Insane Unknowns and Latin Kings. During the mid 1970's, the Spanish Cobras fought a brutal war with both the Insane Unknowns and Latin Kings street gangs. The Insane Unknowns are closely allied to the Latin Kings street gang. In 1977, the Spanish Cobras and Latin Kings were the primary parties of a riot that started in the Humboldt Park at the annual Puerto Rican Day parade. Over a dozen people were killed and several dozens were wounded. In 1978, the Spanish Cobras and other organizations belonging to the United Latino Organization voted to join the Folks alliance, being among the first Latino Folks gangs. In these events, the animosity between these feuding organizations escalated as the Folks and People alliances were founded throughout the streets and correctional facilities. The war between the Spanish Cobras and Insane Unknowns intensified significantly in the late 1970's. In 1979, long time Spanish Cobras founder known as "King Cobra" was killed by members of the Insane Unknowns. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, the Spanish Cobras continued to fight a fierce war against the Latin Kings and Insane Unknowns, in which many lives were lost an all sides. Such tensions subsequently lead members of the organization to expand their operations discreetly into other Northwest side communities. Throughout the 1980's, the Spanish Cobras setup various bases of operations in the Bucktown, Logan Square, Kelvyn Park, and Albany Park neighborhoods. Under the leadership of "Tuffy C", the organization began to orchestrate as a major power on the Northwest side. A key factor in the growth of the Spanish Cobras was the acquisition of territory in Logan Square and in and around the Koz Park area. Prior to this, the Simon City Royals street gang had a firm hold on the grounds. The Spanish Cobras and Simon City Royals fought a violent battle over the control of Koz Park in the 1980's, in which many lives were lost on both sides. The Spanish Cobras were able to establish control over the area in the late 1980's. The Spanish Cobras and Simon City Royals would go on to become bitter enemies, experiencing short spouts of peace treaties, but long era's of territorial wars.
By the early 1990's, the Spanish Cobras were considered one of the largest and well organized Latino street gangs in Chicago. In 1992, the Spanish Cobras became the principle founder of the "Insane Familia", a group of Latino Folks gangs allied on the streets and in the prisons. All organizations granted membership into the Insane Familia adopted the prefix "Insane" to their gangs title. These additional allies add stealth to the Spanish Cobras credibility and power both in the correctional facilities and on the streets. The sole purpose of the formation of the Insane Familia acted as a counter to the aggression and misuse of power by the Maniac Latin Disciples within the Folks alliance. The Spanish Cobras and Maniac Latin Disciples both held significant power on the streets and each organization wanted to control the drug trade on the Northwest sides of Chicago. In result, a consistent war erupted over drug territory and acts of deceit among the leadership from both organizations. However, the Spanish Cobras superiority over the Northwest side drug trade was severely damaged in 1995 when the Chicago Police Department conducted an operation aimed at crippling the organizations structure and hierarchy. An extensive sweep of key members were arrested in the Bucktown, Humboldt Park, and Logan Square communities. The Spanish Cobras operations in the Bucktown community held a essential significance to the organizations distribution tactics. Additional operations were launched by the Chicago Police Department and federal agencies to terminate the gangs stronghold in the Bucktown neighborhood. By the late 1990's, the Spanish Cobras operation in the Bucktown community was completely departed due to police intensity and a series of internal corruption. The Spanish Cobras membership has grown moderately over the past decade, however, this may be due to a selective recruitment process. Never the less, the Spanish Cobras continue to operate a presence in nearly all sectors of the Northwest side, including various Chicagoland suburbs. The Spanish Cobras are an extremely violent organization and are known to engage in shootings to protect their territory. The Spanish Cobras have practically no allies on the streets, usually reserving camaraderie for organizations allied to the Insane Familia. The Spanish Cobras principle rivals have consisted of the Latin Kings, Insane Unknowns, Simon City Royals, Maniac Latin Disciples, Maniac Campbell Boys, Imperial Gangsters, Latin Eagles, Latin Jivers, Milwaukee Kings, Latin Brothers, Latin Stylers, and Latin Pachucos street gangs. The gangs primary criminal involvement has consisted of graffiti, drug trafficking, selling of illegal firearms, assault, arson, armed robbery, theft, extortion, kidnapping, shootings, and murder.
